Dear Miracle Workers,
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I was given a CT scan (short for computerized tomography scan). In fact I had several CT scans and MRIs too before I abandoned the system. I remember being concerned that the CT scan was probably not good for me. My doctors assured me the risk was minimal. They were looking for metastasized tumors on my liver and elsewhere. They found something once but instead of a tumor it was fat and the spot on my spleen was a hematoma. Now there’s a new study out linking CT scans to cancer. They are predicting that 29,000 future cancers could be related to CT scans received in 2007 and most of those cancers will be in the pelvic and abdominal region. How ironic.
The study also says that the amount of radiation received was more than a mammogram but varied widely. Some patients received only 1/10th the amount of radiation as other patients. Did you know that CT scans were not standardized? Apparently the more radiation the clearer the picture. Hmmmm?
Intuitively I did not feel right about these procedures but I went ahead anyway… because I was scared. Yes I was SCARED. I was scared I was going to die from breast cancer and I wanted to know how far along I was. No one twisted my arm… they just encouraged me. I was on medicaid so I didn’t have to pay anything. During the 3 years I was in the grip of the medical system I tried to remain open to what was the best route for me, but I drew the line when they advised me to have chemo, radiation and double mastectomies with reconstructive surgery.
A friend of mine and someone whom I had spent many hours praying with in Lakota Sioux sweat lodges happened to be a radiologist and worked in the lab at the hospital I went to. She called me one day and pleaded with me to get the operations. She told me my type of cancer was very aggressive and my best chances for survival were to do it.
My family encouraged me to go the allopathic route. I come from a medical family. My dad was a doctor, my brother-in-law is a doctor. My sister was afraid I was choosing death. My kids were scared. I prayed a lot about it. It took great courage for me to say no. I prayed I wouldn’t regret it. I had to follow my intuition even if it meant I would die trying. I strongly believe the body can heal itself given the opportunity and the right circumstances… also the right mindset.
The right mindset is probably the most important. It’s probably why allopathic treatment works some of the time. I say some of the time because it doesn’t always. Did you know that iatrogenic error and illness is the third leading cause of death in the US, behind heart disease and cancer? In fact according to the Starfield Study, the total of medically-caused deaths in the US every year is 225,000...
I remember thinking that if western medicine offered me something that just targeted the cancer cells I might consider it, but I work too hard to stay healthy and I don’t want my immune system being compromised. I remember thinking if I could either reverse my condition completely naturally or hang in there until a better alternative was discovered I would be fine.
Well guess what there is a new breakthrough I recently read about coming from Tel Aviv “A never-approved drug developed to prevent the death of nerve cells after a stroke can efficiently kill cancer cells while keeping normal cells healthy and intact, an international team led by a Tel Aviv University researcher is reporting in the journal Breast Cancer Research.”
“Prof. Malka Cohen-Armon of TAU’s Sackler School of Medicine found that the stroke drug — a member of a family of phenanthridine derivatives developed by an American drug company — worked to kill cancer in mice which had been implanted with human breast cancer cells.
“‘Not only did the drug kill the cancer, but when we investigated normal cells, we discovered that they’d reacted as though they hadn’t come in contact with the drug,” says Prof. Cohen-Armon. “This is the result we were hoping for. If human trials go well, we could have an entirely new class of drugs in our hands for the fight against cancer.’”
Is it a coincidence that this researcher’s name is Malka? That’s my hebrew name too. It means Queen and it sits in the center of the logo for my ministry.
So who knows what is beyond the horizon for many of us who have been hanging in there post breast cancer. BTW it’s really cruel to implant breast cancer cells on mice and this may be a thing of the past (see A Legal Challenge to Animal Research:Animal rights law courses may threaten the use of animals in medical research.)
I have not totally given up on the medical system, I just think they lag behind and do not respect enough, the body’s innate ability to heal. But the medical system is made up of people, and it is the people that need to change if the system is going to change.
Some of the healthiest people I know in the system are therapists- physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. Many of them truly understood the value of exercise, diet, independence and quality of life.
I wish crafts were still an important part of Occupational Therapy as that was what motivated me to become an OT in the beginning. There’s been a shift in the last 10 years. Insurance no longer pays for therapeutic activity unless it can be categorized under activities of daily living or exercise. The psychological pleasure of creating something and the increase in self-esteem is not acknowledged like it used to be. Utilitarian activities are favored.
I remember 10 years ago making a woven basket with one of my centenarian patients. Her eyesight was failing and her mind was a little fuzzy but I talked her through the weaving of the ribbons for the simple basket. “Put it under this one and over that one…. and under this one… now put the glue here and press it here…” You get the picture. At the end of the week she had a completed basket and she was so proud of herself, she showed everyone what she had made, the nurse, the aide, her family and friends. She couldn’t stop admiring it sitting there on her bedside table. Then she looked up at me and she said “I want to make lots of these for everyone for Easter. “ That made me smile.
Wishing you all creativity and joy this holiday season.
Expect Miracles!
Blessings,
Melinda

Dear Sun,
According to a new study presented at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual conference, mammography increased the risk of developiing breast cancer in high risk women by 150%. You can read the article by Mike Adams here. The researchers recommend alternatives for women under 40 such as thermography which has been popular with alternative cancer doctors for years.
I’m wondering when mainstream oncology will catch up with the fact that chemo is hazardous to your health? Take chemobrain for instance. According to a recent study, chemobrain or chemo fog is one of the most commonly reported post-treatment symptoms by breast cancer survivors. In a study that came out this year 74 women reported devastating aftereffects a year later that negatively impacted their lives both personal and at work. These included decreased memory, decreased cognition and reduced independence among other symptoms. The majority of women reported a lack of acknowledgement from the medical community when they mentioned their chemobrain symptoms.
I remember when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I did a thorough research on the internet and found Dr. Day online. I printed up several pages of info. Here was a medical doctor who also believed that chemo was harmful. She chose a natural route to cure herself and she said anyone can do it. For some reason I was surprised when my health care professionals were not interested even to read what she had to say. I thought surely they would be open to one of their own. Sadly this was not the case.
I had a conversation with my aunt this morning who is awaiting her biopsy results and also the biopsy results of her daughter’s breast. I told her that the majority of biopsies are negative- but it sure does scare the heck out of women. I was explaining to her that I feel the medical system is really good for acute situations such as breaking a leg or when my labor was not progressing and I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and ended up several hours later with an emergencyCesarean, I am sure my life was saved as a result, (although I wished my midwives could have come to the hospital with me instead of running like fugitives). I think she was surprised to hear me say this. She said the difference between us is that she sees breast cancer in the same light as an acute situation that calls for medical attention.
Maybe I know too much having worked in the hospitals and nursing homes as an occupational therapist. I have covered up for mistakes that others in the system made. After all we are only human. But more than that, I am lacking faith in chemicals- in fact I beleive the opposite, that we need to get the chemicals out of our system. That’s why I fast periodically and eat only organic vegan 98% raw living foods. Maybe because of this my cancer is in remission or maybe I just have scar tissue left from the three surgeries I had… who knows. I am not about to go and have my breast jabbed and squished again to find out. I do not feel it’s necessary as I would continue to do what I am doing anyway.
These studies recently reported, don’t surprise me, nor would they surprise most alternative cancer doctors like Brian Clement of Hippocrates Health Center where Elaina Love’s son is being treated for leukemia. Maybe I shoud say was being treated. After 17 days they head home for the holidays. He is still not better, in fact very ill. He keeps telling his mom he will recover and he very well may. She has surrendered to the path his body needs to take as he is having difficulty keeping down the green juices except for the wheatgrass. He is in pain and is taking morphine.
The raw food community has rallied round them donating more than $100,000 for his treatment and care. In these times that is an amazing gift.
I wonder…how much did his chemo cost? Will he make it? If not, is it because of the treatment or the disease? If he had gone to Hippocrates first when he was still strong, would he have been able to nip it in the bud? We can’t answer these questions.
I have to trust that Dominic’s soul made an agreement with his parents souls in the same way that I did with my parents about being orphaned. We are dancing a dance in the 3d that is the most perfect for our soul’s evolution back to full remembrance of God. If the 3 d is fading there are many other dimensions to focus on to get the 3d back on track. And once we get there… we can rest in the light.
This is my sabbath year since my diagnosis. This is the year I rest in the light of my soul and rejoice. I can look back and say that it is good.
Here is a mandala I drew on Sept 1, 2002. It’s prophetic. The drawing is part of a series of mandalas I made in the month after I was diagnosed to help me get in touch with my unconscious as to why I created breast cancer in my life in the first place. Later I printed my collection of mandalas and quilted them. I self-published a book called Cancer as a Sacred Journey: Healing Breast Cancer through the Arts. If you would like a copy you may contact me at ShiningStarMiracles@gmail.com
There’s lots more for me as to the meaning of this drawing. When I was little my mother used to say the prayer over the candles as the sun set, welcoming in the Sabbath. The Hebrew letters above the picture are Shabat Shalom meaning Welcome to the Peace of the Sabbath.
There were six of us in our immediate family, 4 children and two adults and there were six candle holders and six candles- 2 tall ones and four shorter ones. I was mesmerized with the small candle that represented me- the Light of my Soul. This mandala is a message from Soul for me to return to the wonder of the child in relation to the childlike fascination of that part of me that links to the Great Rays. We are shining stars and this year it is my turn to fully rememember that. Won’t you join me?
Blessings and keep beaming…. EXPECT MIRACLES!
In Love and Light,
Melinda

Dear Friends,
Today I woke up to big snowflakes in upstate New York – Now it’s raining…is that hail on the skylight windows? Definitely not a fun day to go out and play.
Being 98% raw in a cold climate is not easy. I drink bullion and tea to stay warm. Sometimes I have miso soup with vegetable slaw. This morning I made some eggplant jerky. That was quite chewy. I modified the recipe and used very little olive oil. Partly because I had it before and it was way too oily and partly because I barely had any oil left in the jar. Nathan and I do not use oils very often. It’s not a whole food. Given a choice, I would eat an avocado instead.
I ‘ve been thinking about children with cancer and it saddens my heart. Is it true that the children suffer from the “sins” of their parents? More like ignorance… With all the medical knowledge we have we are so ignorant when it comes to keeping the body fit and healthy.
I keep thinking about Dominic- Elaina Love’s son who is struggling with leukemia. At least they are in Florida at the Hippocrates Health Institute where the weather is warm and sunny. There are beautiful outdoor pools there and even a nude sunning roof.
Sunshine is very important to people. It’s not just vitamin D that is important though there are several new studies linking a deficiency and cancer. If that were the case wouldn’t there be way more cancer of every type in the north (see US cancer stats)? As you can see from the map below there is more breast cancer in the north, but the stats are not the same for every cancer.
Female Breast Cancer Incidence Rates* by State, 2005†
Look at cervical cancer Stats from 2005:
I like to think that the energy from the sun is more than vitamin D though (which btw is a hormone). I like to think of the energy we receive from the sun as more like CHI the same CHI that martial artists learn how to control. I was watching a video on far infrared saunas and they said just that- far infared light is also known as CHI. It’s what we take in from the sun and give off from our bodies and back to the earth.
A far infrared sauna really makes days like today far easier to deal with in upstate New York. Nathan and I sell the portable ones on our website www.raw-wisdom.com and we are offering a Christmas discount if you sign up for our newsletter. You can also get a free download of the China Study synopsis. Nathan is great at summarizing. His 6 page download sure beats reading the 400+ page book but we have that available too. You can also purchase an excellent cd of T Colin Campbell’s talk in Philly on the China Study. Any of these would make a great and inexpensive gift for someone you love. It just might change their lives. Wouldn’t that be a miracle?
Here’s a link to Elaina Love’s Day 7 at Hippocrates blogpost. Please keep them in your prayers for his full recovery. Wouldn’t that be a miracle too?
Until next time… EXPECT MIRACLES!
Blessings and keep shining ,

Dear Sun,
Thank you for holding Elaina Love and her son Dominic in the Light.
Elaina is a raw food chef and educator at the Living Light International a culinary school for living foods.
Her son Dominic was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and underwent traditional allopathic treatment. When his recovery took a turn for the worse, Elaine took her son to Hippocrates Institute in West Palm Beach, a well-known alternative cancer treatment center.
A call went out to the Raw Food community to raise the $20,000 needed for his stay. The good news is that they have received almost that much in just a few days.
Here is the latest news from Cheri Soria and Dan Laderman, owners of the Living Light Institute in Fort Bragg, CA:
“Dear Friends,
Dominic is at Hippocrates, continuing to fight for his life. Support for Dominic and his mother, Elaina Love, has been heartwarming beyond belief. People all over the world are forwarding our plea for prayers and donations to their raw e-lists, and we estimate that over 100,000 people have received our bulletins. So far, Living Light has received over 600 contributions and even more importantly, people throughout the raw world are expressing their love and concern through prayer and well wishes for Elaina and her son.
As most of you know by now, after Dominic was diagnosed with leukemia, doctors recommended chemo, radiation, and bone marrow transplant as his best option. He seemed to be improving for a while, then just before Thanksgiving, he took a turn for the worse. That is when the doctors told Elaina they could do no more for him and gave Dominic one week to a month to live.
Naturally, Elaina did what she wanted to do from the beginning, but could not until now – she rushed him to Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida. She didn’t know how she would pay for Dominic’s treatment there, but she went on faith. That is when her Living Light family stepped in and created the Love Fund to help pay for Dominic’s expenses. Incredibly, within the first 24 hours, we had received over 200 donations ranging from $5 to $250. Since then, the money, love, and prayers have poured in abundantly – we have been overwhelmed with the response. Just today, we received word that a benefactor will pay $2000 of Dominic’s medical expenses and financial support is continuing to flow in. At this point, we are happy to report that we are close to raising the entire $20,000 that Elaina estimated she needs to cover their travel to Hippocrates and the services Dominic requires in attempting to save his young life. Of course, we believe that Elaina will need more than her original estimate, since she will not be able to work in the foreseeable future. Dominic will need her support full-time and the initial 3 weeks at Hippocrates is just the beginning of his new healing journey. After his stay at Hippocrates, Dominic will still require continued medical support. Nevertheless, we are beside ourselves with a feeling of gratitude and appreciation that the raw community has rallied to help one of our own. Thanks to all who have contributed in whatever way they could (including those who are sending prayers, or forwarding these messages, even though they could not send money).
A few hours ago, Dan and I spoke with Brian Clement from Hippocrates, who has taken a personal interest in Dominic, both as a father and as one whose life has been devoted to the care and healing of those who are engaged in a struggle for life/health. He says it is always difficult to see the results of cancer treatments that don’t work and which make the situation worse than it was before, but it is so much more heart wrenching when it is a child who is suffering. He has offered a partial scholarship to assist with some of the fees incurred by Dominic while at Hippocrates. So we extend our gratitude to Brian and Anna Maria for their generosity in helping our beloved Elaina and her sweet son, Dominic – who, at 14 years of age, is having to fight for his life. Naturally there are still significant other fees that must go to the medical support at Hippocrates, which Brian has no control over, but Brian and Anna Maria’s willingness to assist financially will help tremendously!
Many people focus on the differences that we, in the raw and natural healing community, have in terms of what we think is THE BEST diet – but in this effort we have come together. Everyone is praying for Dominic – and he needs all the prayers he can get. Dominic needs a miracle – so please take a moment out of your busy life to pray for a miracle.
We are in contact with Elaina on a daily basis. Here is a recent update from her:
12-07-09
Dear Light Family,
Thank you all so very much for your generous contributions to Dominic’s healing. My heart is so touched by you all and I am moved to tears daily. It touches me to my soul to know that you all care so much and to know how much we are loved.
It is our 9th day here at Hippocrates Health Institute and Dominic is doing his best to take all the juices and eat as much of the healing food that he can keep down…I am trusting that he is being well taken care of by God and that he will come through this with excellent health. He told me this morning that he plans on living to be an old man and that he will outlive us all! I loved hearing that.
He is the bravest person I know and my personal hero!!!! One of the guests here told me today that he sets a good example for her and the others because he is so willing to do what it takes. A teacher already!
He is still very weak, and he seems to go up and down with his energy. Today is a low energy day as he has slept through most of it. I do trust and believe, and I know your love and prayers are powerful beyond measure. I appreciate your continued love and prayers, and am so grateful to all of you for the part you are playing in Dominic’s return to well-being.
With all the love in my heart,
Elaina Love

Dear All,
According to 2 new studies painkillers known as opiates promote cancer. The sad thing is that scientists have known about this for 8 years and yet still it is commonly given to those who have cancer.
I prefer curcumin. It comes from the plant tumeric, a highly popular spice in India and also used for healing in ayurvedic medicine. It’s used in alternative cancer clinics as a pain medication that also has anticancer effects. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about curcurmin “Its potential anticancer effects stem from its ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells without cytotoxic effects on healthy cells.”
Everything we know seems to take time before it reaches the public and becomes an acknowledged part of normal mainstream treatment. I wonder when they will be using curcumin instead of opiates, or serving green juices in the hospitals instead of jello or ionized akaline water instead of coffee, to help people get better?
I heard of a friend recently who was diagnosed with cancer and his doctor suggested he drink carrot and beet juice… interesting… I think green juices would be much much better, but it’s a start in the right direction.
Hope you all had a happy thankgiving.
Blessings,
Melinda

Dear All,
Are you one of those women that have routine mammograms? Do you check your breasts for lumps and unusual changes?
Well, on November 16, the US Preventive Services Task Force announced their recommendation that women under 50 not get routine screening mammograms. They also recommend women over 50 have mammograms only once every two years instead of every year. And they recommended that women not do self exams!
Wow. Here’s the official record:
“US Prevention Service Task Force
Mammography Screening Recommendations
For women who are not at elevated risk of breast cancer
No routine mammography screening for women aged 40 to 49.
Screening of women in this age group should be an individual decision, based on patient’s personal risk and attitudes regarding benefits and harms
Mammograms every two years for women aged 50 to 74
Additionally:
Insufficient evidence to assess benefits and harms from screening women over age 75
Insufficient evident to assess benefits and harms from addition of clinical breast exam to mammography
Women should not be taught breast self exam
You can read more about it in Breast Cancer Action’s article Does Mammography Screening Save Lives? by Barbara Brennan director of Breast Cancer Action
I happen to think that the risk of radiation is not worth the testing and that mammograms for those of us with dense breasts is more harmful than helpful. Plus the anxiety that women go though with false positives and unecessary biopsies or treatment is not worth it.
Please see my other post Injury Precedes Cancer
You’ll have to make your own decision.
Blessings,
Melinda

Dear Friends,
Today, Saturday November 14th is World Diabetes Day. The theme for the years 2009 to 2013 is “Diabetes Education and Prevention.”
It’s funny though how “Education and Prevention” can mean totally different things to different people.
For the International Diabetes Organization and the over 12 drug companies that sponsor World Diabetes Day it means educating people about how they can “manage” their diabetes with insulin.
For the team that made the film “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days” it means educating people on how they can prevent and even reverse diabetes with a raw and living foods diet.
Now don’t get me wrong, insulin is an absolutely amazing thing that has saved countless lives, but it’s not something you want to use regularly. The goal should always be to get off of medication whenever possible.
And if that’s the case how come there’s no mention of eating a raw and living foods diet on the World Diabetes Day website? Kind of crazy don’t you think…
To help with the real meaning of “Education and Prevention” for World Diabetes Day the team behind the film “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days” is offering a huge 50% OFF discount on their film and the companion “Raw for Life” 2 disc DVD set.
You can see the trailer for the film and what they’re doing here:

Dear friends,
Today is 11/11 – Do you know what that means? 1111 is a trigger to wake up to higher consciousness. Have you ever found yourself catching the clock exactly at 11:11. I learned about this many years ago from SOLARA when we were both living in Charlottesville. She claims it’s a pre-encoded trigger placed into our cellular memory banks prior to our descent into matter. I believe it. She also believes that the doorway of 11:11 was opened on Jan. 1, 1992 and will close on November 11, 2011 as an entranceway into an evolutionary humanitarian shift into the era of 2012. I have asked other people about 11:11 and was surprised to find many people with their own stories about the numbers. Lightworkers unite around this idea. It just feels totallu right!
So today at 11:11 I meditated for 11 minutes on the healing of my dear friend Dee Yoh from colon cancer. There were probably at least 1111 friends of her meditating at that time, she is so loved. She went to Lake Tahoe to see a healer and we were praying that her tumor decreases enough so that the MRI she rescheduled for next week will show a significant decrease and her doctor will not recommend chemo.
While meditating on Dee I saw the two of us completely merged in our Higher Selves. The healing is on the level of Oneness. That’s where we manifest our life- that’s where the soul resides. We are not in charge with how long it takes to manifest- that’s God’s timing. Will the shift to higher consciousness take place while we reside in the body this lifetime or will we need to release the body to get to the next level? I am convinced that this is my ascension life and I will release any disease while still in the body. I pray the same for Dee.
So today I received a very interesting report from Mike Adams- the Health Ranger at Natural News. Lots of info here Breast Cancer Deception and here: Thinkbeforeyoupink
Ever wonder how much money goes to research from all those pink ribbon breast cancer “charities”. Ever wonder why the very things that promote breast cancer like pink milk chocolate M&Ms and other dairy products are being used to raise funds for research? Is it just ignorance or is it greed? Starnge what money does to people? For a good article on why eliminate dairy if you have breast cancer click here.
Adams conclusion:
“EDUCATE YOURSELF! The cancer industry hopes you remain ignorant. YOU are the only person who has an interest in keeping you healthy. Remember: The healthier you are, the less you’re worth to the cancer industry! The average cancer patient generates about $800,000 in revenues for the cancer industry. I strongly suggest that you find ways to deny the industry those revenues by avoiding this easily preventable disease altogether!
Recommended book: Pink Ribbons, Inc.: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy by Samantha King.”
I’ll have to read the book he recommends… I like the name…
Until next time… Keep shining- you shining stars.
Blessings,
Melinda

Dear Sunshine,
This is a wonderful video by a young cancer researcher prodigy, Eva Vertes. She has so much enthusiasm and joy in researching cancer. What an incredible thinker! Really worth the 18 minutes to listen to her. She has some far out ideas! I really hope she comes up with some wonderful answers for us.

BTW what if mammograms are actually causing us harm by injuring us and that’s one reason why we have more breast cancer (bras may be another- see Dressed to Kill, The Link between Breast Cancer and Bras) ? I have definitely wondered why we smash our boobs between two glass plates – it’s so unnatural. Mammography screening was definitely invented by a man.
Read my post on Mammography Screening.
